New Adult Education Class with Rabbi Joey
Tuesdays, Aug. 9, 16, and 25; 6:30-7:45pm; Free!
After many years of feeling disconnected from an all-powerful, all-knowing God, I started coming across other sorts of representations of the Divine.
God is a crying child
God plays hide and seek
God is a warrior
God bellows as a person in labor
These texts exposed me to a corner of our tradition, that runs from the Bible all the way to contemporary theologies, in which the character of God is unruly, imaginative and contradictory. In my first adult education class at Shir Tikvah, I’m excited to dive into this corner of our tradition.
Over three weeks in August, we’ll explore Jewish theologies, placing classical sources on the Divine in conversation with queer, feminist, and disability theologies, along with our own beliefs and disbelief. In preparation for the High Holidays, we’ll study a series of texts in which God asks humans for forgiveness. The study of these texts has transformed my prayer life and has given me a relationship with a God who longs, struggles and seeks. I can’t wait to share this learning with our community.
This class is being offered for free to anyone interested, but registration is required. We’ll be meeting outside of Shir Tikvah, on the Minnehaha side (will meet in doors and masked if the weather is bad)
