Episode 1: Death, Mayhem, and the Creation of America’s First Progressive Jewish Burial Society

July 29 at noon with R’ Joey

In 1975, Adath Jeshurun Synagogue started America’s first progressive Jewish burial society, right here in Minneapolis.  Mayhem immediately ensued.  Adath’s burial society challenged the economic and social structures that had governed how Minnesota Jews treated their dead.  A battle erupted between synagogues, rabbis, funeral directors and everyday Jews about how we should make decisions as a community and honor our beloved dead.  In this course, we’ll study this history and consider what it teaches us about living and dying in Jewish community.
