Episode 2: Voices from Sacred Trash: Meeting Wuḥsha al-Dallāla Through Fragments from the Cairo Geniza

August 2 at 10:30AM with R’ Jayce

The Cairo Geniza, an archive of around 400,000 documents discovered in the attic of  Ben Ezra Synagogue in Old Cairo, have shaped our understanding of Middle-Eastern, North African, and Andalusian Jewish history from roughly the 6th - 19th Centuries. Join R' Jayce for an introduction to this historical collection, and learn more about the life of Wuḥsha al-Dallāla, a socialite, banker, and public figure in 11-12th century Cairo. Through documents that detail her business dealings, love affairs, and after-death wishes we’ll see how she challenges both modern and historical stereotypes about women, gender, and class.
