In 1812, a brawl erupted before a board vote at Kahal Kadosh Beth Elohim in South Carolina. In 1825, Mordecai Manuel Noah, a famous Jewish playwright, purchased Grand Island in upstate New York in a failed attempt to establish a Jewish state. In 1912, two prominent Jewish sisters attacked each other in the press over their differing views on women’s suffrage.
For the last three hundred years, American Jews have bickered, dreamed, and fought their way into American political life. In this three part course, we’ll explore strange and revolutionary moments in American Jewish civil engagement. Through engaging with this history, we’ll ask the question: how might the struggles, wisdom, and revolutionary creativity of American Jewish history shape our engagement with political life today?
