At Shir Tikvah; RSVP Here
Join us for an immersive, hands-on introduction to the ancient craft of Jewish scribal arts (sofrut). In this interactive workshop, you’ll step into a tradition spanning thousands of years.
Together, we’ll explore the history and halakhah behind the tools of the scribe, and then bring them to life:
Cut and shape your own reed pen (kulmus)
Prepare and trim a feather quill
Mix traditional scribal ink using time-honored methods
Practice Hebrew calligraphy and letter form
You’ll leave not only with new skills, but with the very tools you’ve crafted – ready to write. Whether you're an artist, a maker, spiritually curious, or just someone who likes getting your hands a little messy, we hope you'll join us for this rare opportunity to engage Jewish tradition at its most tactile and elemental. All ages and backgrounds are welcome. As we'll be using scalpels to shape the pens and quills, children under 14 must be accompanied by an adult. This workshop is led by Yonathan Reches, a sofer and member of the Kedusha Project, a collective dedicated to ethical, transparent, and accessible production of Jewish ritual materials. Come get messy with us!
