A Holocaust Remembrance Program: Where Policy and People Intersect

At Shir Tikvah and Zoom, Free, no registration required

In preparation for Holocaust remembrance day on 4/17, we’ll be joined before services on 4/14 by Susan Weinbereg, a local artist and Jewish genealogist. Susan’s teaching will explore the intersection of immigration policy and the impact on people’s lives through the lens of a Holocaust survivor. Through video clips from the Jewish Identity and Legacy Project, you will hear a local survivor recount her story beginning through her eyes as a child in 1933 pre-war Germany, through the Holocaust, and finally to her life in Minnesota post-war. Juxtaposed with her story was the desperate need to escape prior to the war when US immigration policy barred the door. Post-war policies often proved equally restrictive with careful crafting of policy for displaced persons to avoid the under-current of anti-Semitism in the US. These stories raise questions which are unfortunately still highly relevant today. This program is co-sponsored by the Shir Tikvah Sanctuary and Immigrant Justice committee and Jewish Historical Society of the Upper Midwest.
