Erev Rosh HaShanah Youth and Families T’filah

5785 is coming! Ring it in with community at Shir Tikvah! This Rosh HaShanah, our Youth and Families T’filot (services) will center on the theme, “Planting Seeds of Hope: What are we sowing for 5785?” Each of our families will have the opportunity to create hope flags - visual art that represents their dreams for the new year. During the Erev Rosh HaShanah service, we will explore what it means to imagine, to open up into a fresh year of possibilities with new and renewed ideas.

As 5784 ends and we approach 5785, we invite our 2nd through 5th graders and families to consider these prompts: What is a hope you have for the world in the new year? Why? What would be different if that dream became real? Consider behaviors or improvements beyond any individual person or community. Have this conversation as a family beforehand and bring your thoughts with you to the services you attend; we cannot wait to learn what is on your hearts and to swap dreams!

Shir Tikvah Rosh HaShanah Youth and Families T’filot take place at St. Joan of Arc on Wednesday, October 2 and Thursday, October 3. All are welcome to all services; evening Youth and Families services are planned for 2nd through 5th graders and their families - and morning Youth and Families services are planned for newborns through 1st graders and their families.

Kol Nidrei Youth and Families T’filah

5785 is here! Start it in community at Shir Tikvah! This Yom Kippur, our Youth and Families T’filot (services) will center on the theme, “My Ancestors and Me: How do I hold both the old and the new?” During the Kol Nidrei service, we will explore what it means to ground ourselves in our individual and collective pasts as we look to the future of the new year.

On Yom Kippur, we pick back up after the ten days since Rosh HaShanah: We dreamt of a new world on Rosh HaShanah, and on Yom Kippur we commit to doing our part to making those dreams our reality.

As 5784 ends and we approach 5785, we invite our 2nd through 5th graders and families to consider these prompts: Who came before us? What can be meaningful about looking backwards? What can be complicated about looking to the past? Why do we look behind us as we also look in front of us? Consider personal stories as you wrestle with this big theme. Have this conversation as a family beforehand and bring your thoughts with you to the services you attend; we look forward to learning what is on your minds and to swapping stories!

Shir Tikvah Yom Kippur Youth and Families T’filot take place at St. Joan of Arc on Friday, October 11 and Saturday, October 12. During the Yom Kippur Morning service, we will sing and move through this theme of family and traditions as we ground in the present.

On Yom Kippur, we pick back up after the ten days since Rosh HaShanah: We dreamt of a new world on Rosh HaShanah, and on Yom Kippur we commit to doing our part to making those dreams our reality.

Neilah is the dramatic conclusion of Yom Kippur. It’s a time of intense reflection and final pleas for forgiveness. We end Neilah with havdalah, spirited dancing and breakfast.

Simchat Torah

We conclude our High Holy Days with Simchat Torah, our final celebration of the season. A new year means a new cycle of Torah, and it is time to reroll Shir Tikvah’s three scrolls.

Simchat Torah is a festive, musical parade of joy: Dance with our Torot. Unroll the scroll and display all of Torah across our sanctuary. Bear witness to the final words of D’varim and the first words of B’reishit. Then reroll back to the beginning as we parade once more and return our Torah scrolls back to the ark.

Simchat Torah is family-friendly and all are invited to gather, though young families are encouraged to join during the earlier program. Simchat Torah takes place indoors at Shir Tikvah. The location is accessible. All materials are provided.

Outgoing B’Mitzvah Tutors, Steve Greenberg and Gayle Zoffer, will be honored during Simchat Torah for their years of service. Please join us in celebrating their commitment to Shir Tikvah’s B’Mitzvah students.

Sukkot: Stories of the Season

Stories of the Season

Stories have carried our people for generations. Oral and written tales have held our traditions for millennia. And stories are about more than entertainment; in stories, we learn about ourselves, others, and our world. Stories ground us. They inspire us. They fuel a ruach - a spirit - we cannot often find elsewhere. Stories chronicle our past and help us make sense of today.

Stories of the Season gives us the opportunity to dance, learn, and sing our ways into these unique holy days. Our K'tanimot (families with newborns, babies, and tots) are invited to gather for holiday fun: music, stories, snacks, and more as we celebrate these special days together!

Each gathering is a stand-alone event - attend one or more. Stories of the Season is catered to our K’tanimot, though all are invited to gather. Stories of the Season takes place indoors and outdoors - rain or shine. All locations are accessible. All materials are provided.

Rosh HaShanah - No Stories of the Season

Join us instead for the Rosh HaShanah service on Saturday, September 16 at St. Joan of Arc at 9:00am.

Pre-Yizkor Self-Guided Journey of Remembrance

In the moments before Yizkor, you are invited to take time to light candles and remember. If you are in person at St. Joan of Arc, candles and guided reflections will be provided. If you are at home, you are invited to light candles at this time and to use reflection resources provided to remember - those people in your life who have died and those  killed by structural injustices. We offer this meditation as a chance to make space to honor those who have died in years past - lifting up their memories and making space to tend to our own spirits.

Yom Kippur T'filah for Families

The High Holy Days season is a fun time, an important time, a quiet time, a lively time. What we celebrate and honor during the High Holy Days are light and heavy, joyous and serious, simple and complicated. We are looking to gauge interest in whether to offer a remote-access option for our Youth and Families services during the High Holy Days. Remote participation from families has dropped significantly since our return from the pandemic. These services are highly-interactive and we strongly encourage families to join us in person. However, we will happily offer a remote-access option if we hear from a portion of the community. If you are looking for remote-access, please email Forrest Yesnes, Director of Youth and Family Education, no later than August 31. If we do not hear from a portion of the community, Youth and Families services will be held in-person only. Tashlich

Tashlich is an ancient ritual that invites us to leave behind what we do not wish to carry into the new year. Tashlich, or “casting off”, is a visceral experience during which we symbolically throw our sins into moving water. This practice, mixed with our commitments to t’shuvah, represent our return to our best selves so core to the High Holy Days season.

Our communal Tashlich gathering will include song and a chance for personal reflection on the last year, 5783, before we collect stones and other natural items on the beach to toss into Lake Harriet.

Tashlich is family-friendly and all are invited to gather, though young families are encouraged to join during the earlier program. Tashlich takes place outdoors - rain or shine. Feel free to bring a picnic blanket or lawn chair, and a water bottle. All other materials are provided. Wear clothing and footwear that allows you to wade into the water if desired.

Erev Rosh Hashanah T'filah for Families

The High Holy Days season is a fun time, an important time, a quiet time, a lively time. What we celebrate and honor during the High Holy Days are light and heavy, joyous and serious, simple and complicated. Our Youth and Families T’filot (prayer services) are incredible opportunities through which to explore these many diverse themes and a great chance to connect with ourselves, one another, and even more - at every age!

Youth and Families services include singing, movement, learning, and more! They are highly-interactive as we explore the beloved and challenging themes of the High Holy Days through prayer and Torah.

All are invited to gather - especially grandparents. Youth and Families T’filot take place indoors at St. Joan of Arc. The room in which all services take place is accessible. All materials are provided.

Erev Rosh HaShanah T’filah for Families - Friday, September 15 at St. Joan of Arc from 5:00pm to 6:00pm

For 2nd through 5th graders and their families

Rosh HaShanah T’filah for Families - Saturday, September 16 at St. Joan of Arc from 9:00am to 10:00am

For K’tanimot (families with newborns, babies, and tots) through 1st graders and their families

Kol Nidre T’filah for Families - Sunday, September 24 at St. Joan of Arc from 5:00pm to 6:00pm

For 2nd through 5th graders and their families

Yom Kippur T’filah for Families - Monday, September 25 at St. Joan of Arc from 9:00am to 10:00am

For K’tanimot (families with newborns, babies, and tots) through 1st graders and their families

Livestream and Zoom will be offered for community-wide services; this request is only to gauge interest for Youth and Families services.

Shofar in the Park

At the heart of the month of Elul is the sound of the shofar, something we are commanded to engage with all month. The blasts from the shofar are meant to awaken us to the needs of the new year - our own, those of our loved ones, and those of others we do and do not know. As they emerge from the mouth of the shofar, these sounds direct our attention to t’shuvah - a return to our better selves. As they echo in our hearts, these vibrations shake us from complacency. With assistance from the shofar, we spend Elul identifying who we want to be in the next year and how we will become them. Elul will help prepare us for this journey of the High Holy Days, if we let it.

Come prepare for the approaching High Holy Days with Shofar in the Park - two opportunities for this Elul practice. Gather in community. Greet old friends and meet new ones. Explore a story or text. And encounter the shofar blasts.

Shofar in the Park is one of our only opportunities to experience the call of the Shofar at Shir Tikvah this season; the shofar will not be sounded on Rosh HaShanah as it will also be shabbat. Do not miss your chance to hang out with the shofar and experience its sounds!

Each gathering is a stand-alone event - attend one or both. Shofar in the Park is family-friendly and all are invited to gather. Shofar in the Park takes place outdoors - rain or shine. Both locations are accessible. Feel free to bring a picnic blanket or lawn chair, and a water bottle. All other materials are provided.

Sunday, August 27 at Loring Park from 4:00pm to 5:00pm

Gather down the path from the corner of West 15th Street and Willow Street, toward the water.

Wednesday, September 6 at Lyndale Park Rose Garden from 6:00pm to 7:00pm

Gather between the two fountains.

Daily Selichot

Daily Selichot

August 20-September 24th (except for Saturday mornings) at 7:15am on Zoom

It is hard to believe that we are about to embark in the fourth year of our Selichot practice together!  A daily Selichot is a Sephardi practice of reciting penitential prayers and songs daily that provides us the opportunity to journey, individually and in community, into the work of the High Holy Days.  This year, as always, we need to breathe together, go through the process of T'shuvah together and heal from difficult and challenging times. Only then will we be able to get ready for the High Holidays.  We are hoping you will join us at 7:15am- 7:45am in the morning (yes we know it is really early…) starting this year on the third day of Elul, Sunday, 08/20/23, until the morning of Yom Kippur.

Many of our voices were heard in the past three years, and we are hoping new voices will emerge and participate this year; we will have again a spreadsheet of the liturgy/reflection components and we will be able to choose the parts we would like to lead.  If you’d like to sign up to lead a song or teacher over the course of our practice, you can do so here.  If you’re excited to lead, but would need to learn or get a refresher on a section of the practice, please be in touch with Tamar Ghidalia tamarghidalia@gmail.com and R’ Arielle rabbiarielle@shirtikvahmn.org. If you’d like to take a look at our liturgy, you can find it here.

We have learned a lot as a community in this process and are eager to continue our individual and communal work together.

See you soon!

Daily Selichot

For the third year, we are offering a daily Selichot practice during the month of Elul, which begins on Monday September 29th. A daily Selichot practice is a Sephardi practice of reciting penitential prayers and poetry daily from the second day of Elul (August 29th) to the morning of Yom Kippur (October 4th). As in the past two years, this practice will take place on Zoom, at 7:15 am. Daily Selichot in the month leading up to the High Holy Days provides us the opportunity to journey, individually and in community, into the work of the High Holy Days.

There are a number of ways you can participate in this project! Certainly, by logging on and participating in as many mornings as you can for this brief (30 minute) practice. There are also opportunities to take leadership: to read or sing the songs and liturgy that form the backbone of this practice, or to blow the shofar. In addition, there is the opportunity to offer a teaching or reflection to help ground our daily practice.

As we approach the end of a year in which the notion that we were on “solid ground” has been put firmly to rest, a year of Sh’mita in which we have been called to release our claim on our land (literal and metaphorical), we are preparing for a new year in which we will be called to consider what new seeds we will plant.

We invite you to consider, as you enter this practice the notion of forgiveness - what do we need in order to forgive ourselves, to forgive one another, to feel the possibility of forgiveness from one another and from the Divine?  How can we speak truth, to ourselves and to one another, to open our ears and hearts, even when what we are called to hear is hard? How can the process of tochecha (calling another into awareness of their sin) and teshuvah (seeking to repair the harm we have caused through our sins) deepen our relationships, and bring ourselves into alignment? What healing might open for us in that process?

Please join us for Rosh Chodesh Elul on Shabbat, August 27 and Sunday, August 28, for Hallel and for chances to hear melodies and teachings of Selichot and please join us as we begin our Elul journey of Selichot on August 29th.
